The big dugout canoe was found by locals after the bank of the river Don was washed out. The canoe was harmed badly by locals before archeologists came. Comprehensive excavations gave no accompanying findings that could help to establish the age of the canoe. It is different from other known prehistoric European dugout canoes because it has two pairs of handles and monolithic seats on the stern and bow of the boat. The dugout canoe was not finished, then was left near the water and soon was covered with rivers’ clayey aggradations. It could hold not less than 10 people.
The dugout canoe has been exhibited in the museum halls since 1955 and was restored many times.
Exhibits' purpose of use – a flotation device.
