The bowl belonged to Bogdan Khmelnitsky (1595–1657), the leader of the struggle of the Ukrainian people against Polish rule in 1648–1654. The war started in January 1648 with uprising in Zaporizhkiya Sich, which was headed by Hetman-elected Bogdan Khmelnitsky. The Hetman proved himself a bright national leader, a talented commander, an experienced and far-sighted politician. In 1649 Khmelnitsky appealed to Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich with a request to take Ukraine under the power of Russia. On October 1, 1653 Zemsky Sobor gathered the Moscow Kremlin decided to reunite the left-Bank Ukraine with Russia. It was approved by the meeting of representatives of the Ukrainian people – Rada that convened in Pereyaslavl on January 8, 1654.
