A hoard in a jar consists of 6530 silver coins of the end of tzar Mikhail Fyodorovich’s (1596–1645) reign. It was found in a German jar next to Tverskaya Square in Moscow during earthworks in a layer of antique bricks. In 17th century here were situated courts and markets for citizens, who came from Veliky Novgorod, so they used a lot of European items.
We believe that the hoard was put into such a jar from Rhein not accidentally. This jar was branded by a high relief on its neck with a picture of a beard man and a rosette with heraldic image lower it. Such vessels were imported to Russia and are known as “stone Rheinish goods”.
The sum of this hoard – 65 roubles 3 grivnas – was an average income of a merchant, who traded in 17th century at the market of Moscow.
