"Gothic" table set was made for the Winter Palace in 1832 by the project of Ivan A.Ivanov. The original art design of this ensemble has no analogues among other glass sets. Vivid and stylistically strict artistic solution ("neo-Gothics"); bright colors of glass overlays (blue, scarlet and green), a complex pattern of faceting required virtuoso skills of craftsmanship - all this was the reason why this set was rarely supplemented by Imperial Glass Factory.

The awakened interest in history was not limited to appeal to national Russian roots, but became an important manifestation of the European enthusiasm for sense and style of historicism. "The Idea of sustainability of the process of world culture, and at the same time unique originality of its individual eras" created a fashion for plots and forms of the Middle Ages in Art of the first half of the XIX century.
Emperor Nicholas I in particular and his family were fascinated by the plots from the "knight's era". Empress Alexandra Feodorovna had a significant influence in development of interest in medieval art and its neo-Gothic interpretation in applied art; exquisite samples of which surrounded the Emperor’s family at home.
