Expansion of borders of the Russian State in XVI–XVII Centuries was accompanied by monastic colonization of the attached lands. Holy Trinity monastery, founded in the beginning of the XVI Century by Reverend Alexander Svirsky (1448–1533) among the settlements of Karelians, Veps and Chudis in the sparsely populated forest Olonets region, near the Svir River, became one of the major Orthodox centers in the Northern Russian lands in the XVI–XVII Centuries.
The veneration of the Rev. Alexander Svirsky began immediately after his death. 14 years later in 1547 on a Church Convention took place a Church-wide canonization of the Saint among the new Russian miracle workers. This unprecedented event indicated the exceptional in its power veneration of the ascetic in all strata of the Russian society. Already in 1561, in honor of Alexander Svirsky, the chapel of the Moscow Church of the Intercession on the Moat (St. Basil's Cathedral) was consecrated, as one of the victories of the Kazan campaign of Ivan the Terrible was associated with the help of this particular Saint.
The main theme of the Work of the icon painter made the monastic life of Alexander Svirsky and his constant prayer connection with the higher powers. This suggests that the customer belonged to spiritual estate or the monastic order.
