The tip with a side notch belongs to the typical forms of tools of the Upper Paleolithic Kostenky Culture. The tool is made of a large plate of caramel-brownish flint of good quality. The sharper end of the object is broken off. The side recess was the shank or the handle of the tool. It is made by a steep retouch along one edge on the back of the flint billet. Such form made it convenient to fix the tool in the handle or in the shaft. The nib is not quite symmetrical, naturally thinner at the back end of the workpiece. The tip edges are not retouched. Large plate blanks with naturally tapered edges were normally chosen for such tools. This natural form allowed minimal fixing of the tool with retouching, which significantly simplified and facilitated its production.
Functional purpose: it is highly possible that it is a head of a hurling weapon (a spear or a javelin).
Notice of uniqueness: heads with a side recess are extremely rare finds.
